How to Have a Braces-Friendly Holiday Season

At Kavanaugh Orthodontics, we strive to be your premier choice when you’re looking for a Kansas City or Sedalia, MO orthodontist. Along with providing high quality orthodontic treatments such as braces and Invisalign, we also aim to be your source for orthodontic advice and knowledge throughout the entire treatment process. As Christmas is coming up, this brings a new set of challenges for those who normally enjoy the finer parts of the holiday – namely, the candy and delicious foods!  Allow us to take the time to offer you some tips on how to get through the holiday without causing any damage to your braces.

Avoid Hard Candy & Nuts

When you wear braces, you’ll have to avoid hard food as that can break the wire or brackets. This means that many hard candies — especially candy canes — are off-limits for the time being. Anything with nuts should be avoided too, so skip out on pecan pie and peanut brittle until next year.

Skip the Sticky Stuff Too

In addition to forgoing any hard candy, you’ll have to scratch the sticky candy, desserts and other chewy foods. Food that’s sticky can get caught in your braces and loosen or pull off the wire or brackets. Some of the types of food you’ll have to watch out for include taffy and caramel apples.

Don’t Forget Your Oral Hygiene Routine

Because there’s such an emphasis on rich food and desserts during this time of the year, it’s even more important for you to give a committed effort in maintaining your oral hygiene. Make sure to brush a minimum of two times a day, but preferably once after every meal and before bed. Make sure to floss as well to keep food particles from getting trapped in your braces.
