Other Orthodontic Appliances

At Kurt Kavanaugh Orthodontics, we specialize in all sorts of different orthodontic treatments like Invisalign and clear braces for our Kansas City and Sedalia, MO, patients. We like to ensure we give patients the best treatment possible.

While braces on their own will do a great job of giving you a beautiful new smile, sometimes your unique needs may require additional orthodontic help. Dr. Kavanaugh and his caring orthodontic team will recommend the best orthodontic appliances that fit a patient’s lifestyle and desired smile goals.

Elastics (Rubber Bands)

The use of elastics helps improve the fit of upper and lower teeth. Wearing rubber bands as instructed by Dr. Kavanaugh will ensure you get a healthier, straighter smile.

Herbst Appliance

The Herbst appliance helps reduce a severe overjet. The gentle force of the appliance encourages your lower jaw to move forward and the upper molars to move backward without interrupting your normal jaw functions like chewing or speaking.

It’s important to keep in mind that you can’t remove this type of orthodontic appliance during treatment. Typically, we use this device for younger, growing children over a 12- to 15-month period.

Retainers

Retainers are removable devices that hold your teeth in their new, correct position. Dr. Kavanaugh will provide proper instructions on how to care for your retainers, as well as how long and how often you’ll need to wear them.

Wearing a retainer as instructed is super important. If you don’t wear the retainer properly and as prescribed, your teeth could begin to shift back out of alignment, reversing the hard work you’ve put in over the duration of your treatment.

Nance Appliance

The Nance appliance keeps your teeth from moving or shifting.

This device fits comfortably along the roof of your mouth with bands placed on your back teeth. A wire connects the bands and keeps everything in place. This wire spans the top of your mouth to a pad or acrylic that rests just behind your upper front teeth.

Bionator or Frankel Appliance

Bionators or Frankels — otherwise known as functional appliances — are customized acrylic and metal removable appliances that Dr. Kavanaugh may prescribe if you have more pronounced jaw discrepancies.

These appliances are made to work with your child’s growth and development.
